Yay a new player! Welcome to the world.

Iron ingots are common crafting materials, which can be salvaged using a salvage kit on an item. As for what items will salvage into iron ingots, I'm not entirely sure but the safest bet is to go for weapons like swords or axes which have metal parts. Using a normal salvage kit will practically guarantee a common crafting material of some kind. For rare crafting materials and runes (which you need later in the game), use an expert or superior salvage kit.

More on salvaging here: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Salvage

OR

Common crafting materials are among the cheapest items in the game to buy from traders. They sell in stacks of ten. Iron ingots should be pretty cheap.

EDIT- Fixed the link.

Metal items when salvaged, will generally give you iron ingots or steel. Occasionally the icon only appears to be metal and you get something unexpected, such as granite

Alternatively, the Crafting Materials Trader usually has a pretty good stock of iron, but certain times of the year (usually when a new chapter is released) his stock can dwindle to very low amounts due to everyone wanting new armor.

Guildwiki will list the known items that salvage to iron, you can look it up there. My son saved, edited and printed a list as he was looking ahead to what armor he wanted so started salvaging for steel early.

That's a good plan also, look ahead to the max armor you'd like (also on guildwiki) and make note of the materials needed and start collecting them. Much cheaper than buying them.
